Sir Keir Starmer has been elected as the new leader of the Labour Party. The 57-year old defeated Rebecca Long-Bailey and Lisa Nandy in a ballot of party members, trade unionists and registered supporters and will succeed Jeremy Corbyn as opposition leader. The lawyer, who became an MP in 2015, won on the first round of voting, with more than 50% of the vote. He said his task was to "lead this great party into a new era, with confidence and hope". In a video message released by the party, he said it was an "honour and privilege" to have been elected and he hoped Labour "when the time comes can serve our country again - in government". #UK_possession_of_Elgin_Marbles #PM Kyriakos Mitsot #Mona_Lisa Keeping the Elgin Marbles at the British Museum is artistic vandalism akin to cutting the Mona Lisa in half, the Greek prime minister said today as he appeals for them to be returned to Athens. Kyriakos Mitsotakis stepped into the row over whether the 2,500-year-old friezes, also known as the Parthenon Sculptures, should be removed from the British Museum. Greece has long demanded the return of the ancient art, which was removed from the Parthenon 200 years ago when Athens was under Ottoman control. Last week it was reported that Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer would be open to repatriating them if he becomes prime minister at the next election. Asked where the Parthenon Sculptures would look better, Mr Mitsotakis told the BBC's Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg programme: 'I think the answer is very clear. They do look better in the Acropolis Museum, a state-of-the-art museum that was built for that purpose.' He went on to say he would be meeting both Sir Keir and Rishi Sunak in London this week, adding: 'This is not in my mind an ownership question, this is a reunification argument, where can you best appreciate what is essentially one monument? 'I mean, it's as if I told you that you would cut the Mona Lisa in half, and you will have half of it at the Louvre and half of it at the British Museum, do you think your viewers would appreciate the beauty of the painting in such a way? #world news #world news today #world news live #world news today live #world news tonight #world news cat #world news today bbc #world news on chandrayaan 3 #world news now #world news today live ukraine, #world news abc, #world news august 31/2023, #world news al jazeera, #world news africa, #world news australia #world news analysis #news #world news #world #tvp #world #breaking news #us news #christian world #news#bbc #news #globalnews #internationalnews #latestnews#worldnews #today #latest #worldnews #world #news in english #top news #livenews #u.s.news #hindinews #newstoday #faithnews #nightly #news #eveningnews #national #news#in the world #my world#news #nation news,#nbc #nightly news,#9 news, #sydney news #9news #toronto news #ireland news#abc news#war news#sky news

Jeremy Corbyn and Owen Smith have clashed over party unity in the first Labour leadership campaign hustings. Mr Smith said the party was "fractured" and "splintered" and said Mr Corbyn had been unable to hold it together. Mr Corbyn said it was difficult for Mr Smith to complain "when you and others resigned from the shadow cabinet". The rivals agreed on some points but Mr Smith said the Labour leader was unable to present a "credible government-in-waiting" to the wider country. During the 2020 Labour leadership election Keir Starmer pitched himself as a more professional leader than Corbyn, whilst sharing the same left-wing politics. It was a strategy that proved successful, but at the time some weren't convinced of Starmer's sincerity to continue a left-wing policy platform. In this look-back from after the first hustings, Michael Walker, Andrew Fisher and Sienna Rodgers assessed the state of play in the Labour leadership election. #TyskySour is broadcast every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7PM here on the Novara Media YouTube channel. The Labour Party's membership has risen to a record high, having increased by about 100,000 since the election. But who are the new members and how will they influence the result of the Labour leadership contest? Subscribe to our channel here: 🤍 Newsnight has been told by a source on Labour's ruling body, the National Executive Committee, that the new total figure is 576,000. That would surpass the increase seen during the 2015 leadership contest. The latest rise in numbers has been driven by the race to succeed Jeremy Corbyn, with the ballot to replace him opening on 21 February. The last recorded high was in December 2017, where the total number reached 567,400. The party experienced a gradual decrease in membership numbers from 2018 onwards. This trend only slowly started to be arrested as the general election approached but has reversed quickly in the weeks following. All of these new members, so long as they joined before 20 January, will be able to vote in the party's upcoming leadership and deputy leadership contest.
