China’s President Xi Jinping is a force to be reckoned with. As leader of the Communist colossus, he commands the world’s attention, but who is China’s strongman and what is his agenda? Born into the privileged life of a princeling, banished to poverty in the countryside during a political purge, his early life formed and framed his views on power and control. His rise up the political ladder was propelled by party connections and an advantageous celebrity marriage. As he rose through the party ranks, he carefully crafted his image. Today it’s a full-blown cult of personality featuring compulsory lessons in “Xi Jinping Thought”. China specialists say that the country has already fundamentally re-written the international rule book. The question is, how will the rest of the world respond? _ Watch more Four Corners investigations here: 🤍 You can also like us on Facebook: 🤍 Follow us on Twitter: 🤍 And sign up for our newsletter: 🤍 _
Tell the World: Exposing how China is creating the world’s largest prison. Four Corners uncovers disturbing evidence of how China is effectively operating the world’s largest prison. It’s a remote corner of the world, but what is taking place in China’s Xinjiang province is nothing short of breathtaking. Today its Uyghur population is being systematically rounded up and detained, with estimates of as many as a million citizens being held in re-education camps. Even those still left in their homes are being monitored. The communist regime is using cutting edge technology, mass surveillance tools and artificial intelligence to control an entire population. By piecing together witness accounts from Australian citizens caught up in the Chinese Government’s campaign, along with satellite imagery analysis and official documents uncovered online, the truth about what is occurring in Xinjiang is laid bare. We have uncovered evidence of detainees being forced to work in factories with implications for Australian companies doing business in the region. We also reveal concerning evidence about Australia’s links to China’s dystopian surveillance state and the tools used to racially profile its own citizens. The events unfolding in China are creating heartbreak for Uyghurs in Australia. They have stayed quiet for fear of provoking the authorities into punishing their relatives. Now, in desperation they are breaking their silence to tell the world what is going on. - Watch more Four Corners investigations here: 🤍 You can also like us on Facebook: 🤍 Follow us on Twitter: 🤍 And sign up to our newsletter: 🤍 - This program features contributions from: Nurmuhammad Majid, East Turkistan Australian Association Adam Turan Sadam Abudusalamu Nurgul Sawut, Australian Uyghur Association Prof James Leibold, ethnic policy in China, La Trobe University Dr Darren Byler, anthropologist, University of Washington Almas Nizamidin Nathan Ruser, Satellite analyst, Australian Strategic Policy Institute Dr Adrian Zenz, Independent researcher Hayrullah Mai Gulnur Idreis Cheng Jingye, China's Ambassador to Australia
Tensions over Taiwan are the highest they’ve been in nearly three decades. China has warned it will take Taiwan by force if necessary, while US military strategists are now mapping out war games to predict the impacts of a conflict. They forecast it could become a brutal regional war, with casualties and carnage on a scale not seen since WWII. It’s increasingly becoming a question of when – not if – China will launch an assault. Experts say it could be as early as 2025. And Australia would play a key role in the conflict as it spills across the Pacific. The investigation reveals how the US has been quietly building up its military assets in northern Australia, including plans to deploy nuclear capable B-52 bombers south of Darwin. There are now fears that relationship could pull Australia deeper into any future conflict. _ Watch more Four Corners investigations here: 🤍 You can also like us on Facebook: 🤍 Follow us on Twitter: 🤍 _ Note: In most cases, our captions are auto-generated. #ABCNewsIndepth #ABCNewsAustralia

Red Flags: The infiltration of Australia’s universities by the Chinese Communist Party. Four Corners presents a major investigation into the infiltration of Australia’s universities by the Chinese Communist Party. These institutions are embroiled in a growing geo-political storm amid rising concerns over the Chinese Government’s expanding power abroad. Australia’s universities earn billions of dollars a year from student fees and research collaborations with China, but there are growing fears these lucrative arrangements may be putting our academic independence, human rights commitments and even our national security at risk. President Xi Jinping wants to establish the People's Republic of China as the leading world power of tomorrow. Never before has China been so successful and pursued such ambitious goals. And never before has China so upset the global political balance. The person largely responsible for China‘s dramatic shift is the President of the People's Republic, Xi Jinping. As the key figure in Chinese politics, he has steered the communist country with sober pragmatism and calculation since 2013. In terms of domestic policy, Xi strives for the "perfect dictatorship." When it comes to foreign policy, he wants to rewrite the international rules. What are the goals of this mysterious autocrat, who was deeply influenced by Maoism in his youth? What motivates him? This documentary traces the rise of the Chinese president, and tries to answer the question of what his political plans for the future might look like. The Chinese president’s friendly demeanor should not obscure the fact that Xi Jinping is willing to do anything to fulfill the mission of his Communist Party: To make China the leading economic and military power by 2049, the 100th birthday of the People's Republic. In 2017, following extensive political purges, Beijing paved the way for Xi Jinping to be "president for life". His rallying cry is the "Chinese Dream," an ideology with nationalist overtones. Those who don't toe the line end up in prison and must publicly apologize. What’s more, a new electronic monitoring system is being implemented - to distinguish between good and bad citizens. On the international stage, Xi Jinping is trying to establish a new social order that is worrying for Western democracies. This documentary on President Xi Jinping is the first of its kind. A People's Liberation Army officer close to the halls of power, a Beijing historian, several regime critics, a former US ambassador to China and several biographers attempt to decipher Xi Jinping‘s uncompromising strategy. #documentary #dwdocumentary DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. It’s likened to a scene from an apocalypse. Wuhan — a city more populous than London or New York — placed in ‘lockdown’ following the outbreak of the new and deadly coronavirus. In China, more than two thousand people have died, with tens of thousands more infected, and authorities are resorting to extreme measures to try to halt the contagion. In interviews filmed on smartphones, Chinese activists and Australians trapped in the lockdown explain what they are going through.
